Saifee Ship has thrived as a maritime chandlery for nearly 50 years. World Cruise Industry Review talks to business development director Idris Shahpurwalla about the diversity and reliability of the equipment the company supplies to the cruise industry.
Idris Shahpurwalla: Saifee was established in 1971 as a local hardware supply specialist. After 45 years, we have grown to become the leading stores supplier and service providers in the Middle East to the maritime and offshore industry.
We have found that the range of requirements for stores on board a cruise vessel are different than most other types of vessels. For example, where victuals and technical stores are concerned, the cruise industry demands a higher specification. That suits us well since our number-one priority is the quality of our supplies.
Our vast stock holding, which consists of the majority of the IMPA/ISSA catalogue and beyond, is founded on the principles of quality and reliability. We specialise in technical and victualing stores, with a range of items covering tastes and cuisine from Asia to the US. Meanwhile, our technical stock covers all the areas of engine stores, galley, cabin and electrical stores, as well as rigging, pyrotechnics and hydraulics equipment.
Given the fact that, above all, these vessels are entrusted with the safety of a large number of passengers, we ensure that our products meet all the requirements where certification is concerned. Ensuring full compliance at all stages of the business process is standard procedure at Saifee.
For most stores, where critical, our products are IACS approved. Our safety products are also approved by SOLAS as well as IACS where required. Most of our specialised products carry quality certification from various bodies, including USCG and CE conformance. Our entire facility is HACCP approved, and food-handling training is provided and certified by the British Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. This ensures that our provisions storage and handling is certified to the highest standards.
The cruise industry benefits a great deal from our ability to provide value-added services. The quality of our products provides long-term sustenance, and with our strengths in purchasing in bulk and holding stocks, we can pass a great deal of cost savings on to our clients.
Our victualing teams are independently certified food handlers, and fresh-produce sourcing teams ensure every supply of fresh produce is checked for quality. Moreover, our investment in supply infrastructure, with a portfolio of up to 700,000ft2 of functional and certified Saifee Group facilities across the UAE, as well as our specialisation in various areas of the maritime supply and engineering, and expertise in sourcing and quality management, all bring a large set of advantages to our clients.
Under the meticulous guidance and leadership of the royal families in the emirate, Dubai has grown exponentially over the past two decades. Tourism, logistical infrastructure and the continuous prevalence of a positive sentiment, attract a great deal of opportunity in the country. Additionally, Port Rashid, the central cruise terminal, being awarded a prestigious certification by the global regulating authority opens up doors to further enhance global exposure to the country via tourism, which in turn helps boost the local economy.
Our focus is expansion within the industry and, since the very beginning, the emphasis has always been on stable growth. We expect to provide more services, and expand our reach with the industry in a sustainable and steady manner. ?
