Port of Cartagena - Port of Cartagena

CARTAGENA IS READY

Dear colleagues and friends,

We hope you and your families are staying healthy and safe. Since COVID-19 took hold, our world, our economy and our lives have changed completely. This virus outbreak has significantly affected the cruise industry stronger than any other past difficulties.

Fully aware of the tough times you are facing and the challenges ahead, we would like to congratulate you for the tremendous work and the outstanding job that you are doing.

At the same time, we would like to inform you that as part the Port of Cartagena, liaison between the onshore and the offshore teams, we want everyone’s safety: passengers, crew and locals.

For this reason, the Port Authority has been working on a cruise operations protocol, following the instructions of the Spanish government, based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the EU Healthy Gateways and the European Maritime Safety Agency. The port has adapted the Cruise Terminal following this new procedure in order to operate in safe and healthy conditions for everyone.

As cruise destination the city of Cartagena and the region of Murcia has obtained over 50 certificates in Safe Tourism, covering businesses engaged in the cruise industry: tourist attractions, guides, transportation and many others.

As soon as the resumption of cruise activity takes place, the Port of Cartagena will be ready to receive you back!

NATURE AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Castle Routes

Given the great military influence found in Cartagena, castles and batteries are located all along the coast, many of which you can visit through walking and cycling routes. Castillitos Battery, meaning little castles, is located in Tiñoso Cape.

It is a former military battery with spectacular views of the Mediterranean. The construction includes huge cannons that were capable of shooting projectiles as far as 35 kilometers. They were installed in parallel to the ones in las Cenizas Battery, in the town of Portmán, to protect the region against sea attacks.

Horseback riding in Calblanque Protected Nature Reserve

Calblanque, covering an area of more than 1,800 hectares, is the most important wild park of the area. From the cove of Cala Reona, in Cabo de Palos, to the mining town of Portmán, you can enjoy cliffs, sandy beaches, dunes, gorgeous coves and saltwater marshes. Take a horseback riding tour through this amazing virgin area. Trekking Routes

In the interior of the region, the Regional Park of Sierra Espuña offers beautiful trekking routes for the whole family. Walk through the different paths to enjoy the great outdoors of this unique setting. Visit the mountain town of El Berro, the impressive Leyva Valley, and Pozos de la Nieve, former snow wells that were used to supply ice to the cities of the region.

Other outdoor activities

Among the water activities that may be practiced all year round given the warm climate, you may go scuba diving in Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve, found in the small fishing town of Cabo de Palos, home to unique flora and fauna of the area, with crystal-clear waters and rich seagrass. Next to this town, we find La Manga del Mar Menor, a strip of land 22 km long, separating the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor saltwater lagoon (largest in Europe). Practice sea kayaking and take a quick swim while you are at it!
