Nedstack and AVL forge Powerhouse Partnership to accelerate Mass Production of Third Generation PEM Fuel Cell Stacks.

Friday, July 28, 2023 by Nedstack fuel cell technology B.V.

Nedstack and AVL enter into an Industrialization Support Partnership where AVL will provide co-development, sampling and verification services to support the industrialization of Nedstack’s 3rd generation stack platform;
• The partnership builds upon the ongoing cooperations between Nedstack and AVL under the framework of the MoreLife program and other stack development and simulation efforts;
• The Nedstack Gen.3 platform is on track for start of production in the first quarter of 2025 in Arnhem, The Netherlands;

 Nedstack, a leading provider of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology, and AVL, the world's largest independent company for the development, simulation, and testing of powertrain systems, are delighted to announce a groundbreaking partnership focused on the industrialization of Nedstack's highly-anticipated third generation stack platform for high-power and high-use applications. The partnership will expand on ongoing collaboration by including sampling, manufacturing trials and testing services. The technology basis of this partnership is the Nedstack 3rd generation PEMFC cell which has been under development since 2017.

This partnership marks the formalization of the ongoing cooperation between Nedstack and AVL, building upon their ongoing collaborations under European funded research and innovation programs. By joining forces, both companies aim to bring the Nedstack 3rd generation cell to mass production, leveraging AVL’s advanced facilities and technology leadership in stack development and integration.

Nedstack's third generation stack platform represents a significant leap forward in the development of PEM fuel cell technology, offering unparalleled power and durability for demanding applications in stationary and maritime environments. "We are thrilled to cooperate further with AVL under this formal ramework. It will help us package half a decade of advanced cell development in a stack platform which facilitates integration in various systems using all the best practice in which AVL is so proficient," said Mark Rankenberg, CTO of Nedstack. "By combining our expertise, resources, and ongoing collaboration, we are taking a giant step towards the mass production of third generation PEM fuel cell technology, which holds immense potential for a wide range of applications."

Through this collaboration, Nedstack and AVL will focus on optimizing the industrialization process of Nedstack's third generation stack platform. The aim is to enhance its manufacturability, scalability, and overall performance, ultimately enabling the seamless integration of PEM fuel cell technology into various industrial applications such as zero-emission ships, stationary power, and off-grid power systems.

"Our partnership with Nedstack is the next step to industrialize fuel cell technology for a mass market, make it affordable and hence accelerate technology deployment," stated by Juergen Rechberger, VP of Hydrogen & Fuel Cell of AVL. "By combining Nedstack's cutting-edge cell technology with AVL's extensive stack engineering and test capabilities, we are poised to unlock the full potential of third generation PEM fuel cell technology, revolutionizing the future of clean and sustainable power solutions."

The terms and conditions of the partnership are documented in a separate supplier agreement and GTC of Nedstack, along with several appendices that outline the specifics of the collaboration.
